The association “SpielLandschaftStadt eV” was founded in 1999 in Bremen and has its office on the grounds of the Alten Eichen Foundation in the Horn district of Bremen.
The association is committed to creating and maintaining a child- and family-friendly environment, strengthening the health of children and young people, and realizing the rights of children as laid down in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
He sees young people as the experts of their everyday lives and therefore focuses on their participation and that of their parents in his activities.
In accordance with its objectives, the association is active in the following areas:
- Developing play and activity spaces in the city for children and young people
- Implementation of participatory processes to improve the spatial environment
- Further training opportunities for parents and professionals
- Information, public relations and networking, documentation
- In recent years, the association has carried out a large number of projects and activities in these fields:
Supporting initiatives
Through the joint initiative "Creating Play Spaces," funded by the German Children's Fund and the Senator for Social Affairs, SpielLandschaftStadt offers advice and financial support for play space initiatives. Since 1997, approximately 300 projects have been realized in this way, with well over half a million euros in funding.
Continuing education events
The association offers a range of training events each year on the topics of play, movement, health promotion, and child rearing. The target groups are primarily educational professionals, experts from politics and administration, and especially parents.
Playing field information system
On behalf of the social services department, SpielLandschaftStadt maintains the play area information system, which records locations for play and physical activity in the city and allows for the analysis and management of play area distribution through its linkage with resident data. The association also provides the "Bremen Family City Map" (www.bremer-familienstadtplan.de) online for public access. This map offers quick and easy access to information about play opportunities, as well as facilities such as schools, cultural institutions, and sports clubs.
Movement-Nutrition Mobile bemil
Since 2007, the association bemil has been offering its services in various neighborhoods, playfully introducing children aged three to twelve to exercise and healthy eating. Using the modules – mostly made of wood – children create flexible play landscapes in the streets and other open spaces, learning about healthy eating through simple activities. bemil is used at street and neighborhood festivals, school events, temporary play streets, and in kindergartens. Recently, the association has increasingly focused its efforts on socially disadvantaged neighborhoods, thereby making an important contribution to social work. Since its inception, thousands of children and parents have used bemil. The association is supported in this project by highly dedicated volunteers.
Game management
The aim of the play area master plan, which has so far been developed for three Bremen districts, is to show urban and social planning professionals where children, young people, and parents see problems in their district, where their opportunities for play, exercise, and recreation are limited, and how they envision their district in the future. The results of this participatory process (walk-throughs with children, workshops with young people, surveys of parents) are compiled into an action plan, which is then presented to the planning authorities and advisory boards. Several projects, such as the much-lauded temporary play streets, where streets are regularly closed to traffic on a set afternoon each week so that children can play, are the result of this participatory process.
The association pursues exclusively and directly charitable purposes within the meaning of the section "Tax-privileged purposes" of the German Fiscal Code in its currently valid version. It operates independently of political parties and religious denominations.
In 2009, SpielLandschaftStadt eV was included in the Bertelsmann Foundation's thematic report "Fit and Happy! Health Promotion for Young People" and was recognized as worthy of support.
