The worst injuries caused by drugs are inflicted on people who do not take drugs themselves: These are the children of alcoholics or other addicts (COAs).
Currently, approximately three million children live with at least one parent suffering from addiction. This means that every fourth or fifth child is affected. The majority of these children, approximately 2.65 million, live in a household with an alcoholic parent.
An unalterable fate? Addiction is a family disease and often a source of suffering and death across generations. Are addiction and its consequences an unalterable fate for the children of addicts?
No! These children have a good chance of developing into healthy, mature, capable adults if they receive appropriate support.
