The legal entitlement to full-day care starts on August 1, 2026

From August 1, 2026, the legal entitlement to full-day education and care for children in the first grade will come into effect. In subsequent years, the entitlement will be gradually extended to grades two to four, so that from the 2029/30 school year it will apply to all children in grades one to four.

"Dad Time – But Different!" – that's the title of the new book for children of incarcerated individuals. "Children, in particular, suffer when a family member is imprisoned. The book originated as a project of the father-child course at the Bremen Correctional Facility. It aims to alleviate children's anxieties and explain what imprisonment can mean for the families of inmates," explains Senator of Justice Claudia Schilling.
