birth

Pregnancy is an exciting time full of changes, during which the expectant mother's body prepares for the arrival of the baby. The period of pregnancy and childbirth is often accompanied by many emotions and tensions.
A pregnant person is sitting in a bathtub, about to give birth. Another person is sitting next to her, holding her hand.
  • You can contact several organizations, depending on your needs: Midwives offer advice on pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Many also offer an initial consultation.
Gynecologists answer medical questions and support you throughout your pregnancy. Bremen's maternity hospitals offer information evenings, tours of the delivery rooms, and telephone consultations. Early Intervention Services Bremen can support you if you are unsure or need additional help – free of charge and confidentially.

  • Bremen has four maternity hospitals: Bremen-Mitte Hospital, Bremen-Nord Hospital, DIAKO Hospital, and St. Joseph-Stift Hospital. Home births and birthing center births are also options.

  • Ideally, this should be done between the 20th and 30th week of pregnancy. Many hospitals offer online registration and information evenings. For a birth center or home birth, it is advisable to register at the birth center as early as possible.

  • You can rest assured: emergencies are treated in all clinics. In the case of premature births or complications, a transfer to the Perinatal Center at Bremen-Mitte Hospital may be necessary.

  • For registration and birth at the hospital you will need your maternity record, health insurance card, identity card or passport and, if applicable, marriage certificate or acknowledgment of paternity (for registration at the registry office).

  • The postpartum period is the initial time after birth. Your body recovers, and you get to know your baby. Rest, support, and time are especially important now. During the postpartum period, you are entitled to midwifery care. In Bremen, your midwife will come to your home, answer your questions, and monitor the development of you and your baby.

  • Mood swings or feelings of depression can occur after childbirth. If these feelings persist, you should seek help, for example from your midwife, your doctor, an early intervention center, or a psychosocial counseling center.
