Single parent | Separated parent

Single parents often face particular challenges. Advice centers, meeting places, leisure activities, and events that single parents can attend alone or with their children can offer support.
An adult person is seen from behind, walking with a child on each hand.
  • "Single parent" means that one parent is solely responsible for raising and caring for one or more children because the other parent does not live in the same household or does not (regularly) participate in their care. The child lives predominantly with one parent (e.g., the mother or the father).

  • In Bremen, there are many support options for single parents – whether for financial, social, or professional matters. Since every situation is different, you can contact advice centers to determine your specific needs.

  • As a single parent, you may be eligible for support depending on your situation, such as child support advances, housing benefit, child supplement, or benefits under the Education and Participation Package. The social services centers in your neighborhood or the youth welfare office can help you with questions and applications.

  • In Bremen, you can apply for child support advance payments if you are a single parent and the other parent pays no child support or only pays irregularly. The child support advance payment office at the Social Services Department is responsible.

  • The Bremen child and family counseling centers offer support in clarifying issues related to visitation, handovers, or communication. The consultations are voluntary and aim to help find a good solution for the child.

  • Early intervention services in the city of Bremen, including family midwives, family centers, and counseling services, offer relief, conversations, and practical support. You can also address minor questions or concerns here.

  • Yes. Many mothers' and family centers, family centers, or other facilities offer groups for single parents, parent cafés, or exchange sessions. It's worth asking around in your own neighborhood.

  • The city of Bremen offers information on childcare hours, daycare and nursery places (via the daycare portal), as well as advice on returning to work. Family centers and the job center also provide advice on work-life balance issues.
