The Good Templars in Germany offer various types of groups. The discussion groups are open to people with addiction problems and their families. Membership in the association is not a requirement for participation in these groups – just as it isn't for participation in women's groups, men's groups, family clubs, children's groups, and other activities.
The Good Templar communities form the heart of the Good Templar work. Members are united in these groups.
Membership is open to anyone who commits to an alcohol-free lifestyle and adherence to the statutes. Guests are always welcome in the Good Templar communities. In addition to membership in a Good Templar community, individual membership is also possible in exceptional cases.
The Good Templar communities are grouped into regional associations. There are no fixed membership fees; the amount of the contribution is determined by the individual Good Templar community.
The Good Templars see themselves as an organization with tasks related to addiction prevention, support, and alcohol policy. We consider abstinence from personality-altering substances a fundamental prerequisite for achieving our goals and principles.
This gives rise to all measures and activities – in addiction support, in educational work, in children's and youth activities, in the field of alcohol policy action and in the international work of the Good Templars.
My parents drink
Alcohol addiction is a treatable disease. However, for treatment to be successful, a person must first recognize that they are indeed ill. For a long time, addicts delude themselves into thinking they can still handle alcohol.
As a child, you may have already experienced your parents giving you a ride in the car when they were drunk, or sending you to get beer. Sometimes they don't keep their promises or suddenly become angry and violent.
You can't solve your parents' alcohol problem.
And it's not your fault.
Remember these two important sentences. What you can do is take care of yourself. Talk to someone you trust. This person should be able to help you.
Almost every town has a children's helpline. You can look it up in the phone book or online and call it. Almost everywhere you'll also find family counseling centers, addiction support services, or self-help groups. Keep trying until you find someone who listens to you and takes you seriously.
The association NACOA – an advocacy group for children from families affected by addiction – can also help you. You can find more information about their helpline and group chat at Nacoa.de.
In Hamburg, Sucht und Wendepunkt helps children from families affected by addiction. You can call them on the free phone number 0800-2802801
