Where does the name Hoppenbank come from? Hoppen is the Low German pronunciation of hops. Bank means a bank (e.g., sandbank). Consequently, hops were cultivated on a sandbank in Bremen.
In its early days, the Hoppenbank eV association rented accommodation for released prisoners on Hoppenbank Street and then adopted the name of the street as the association's name.
We help offenders with the difficult transition from prison to life and aim to meaningfully complement existing state support services through our activities.
The association pursues a preventive approach: We believe that social work with those affected is important and in many cases has a more sustainable effect than measures involving deprivation of liberty and other state sanctions.
Our stated goal is to support those affected by crime, to reduce social problems, and to highlight crime as a problem for society as a whole.
Since our founding in 1971, we have developed a wide range of support services for offenders in the field of offender rehabilitation.
In response to existing gaps in services, the association has designed a wide range of services, oriented them towards the needs of those affected, and then consistently implemented them.
We see ourselves as an integral part of a regional support network for offender rehabilitation. Our activities are based on the concept of networking; that is, we want to expand and thus improve the effectiveness of existing support systems together with our cooperation partners.
In this way, we get closer to our goal of providing adequate support to as many people seeking help as possible, because together we can achieve more. With this in mind, we want to shape and continuously optimize our collaboration with our various partners. Of course, we are always happy to establish new, promising contacts.
Our cooperation partners in the diverse fields of work of the association include institutions of the independent welfare sector, especially offender support, the social services of the judiciary, the correctional facilities, the entire spectrum of the drug support system, public offices and authorities, as well as volunteers.
