Opportunities for diverse people and interest groups to meet in the neighborhood
The community and social center (bus…) has been located for over 25 years in a residential area on a former school site in the heart of Bremen's Huchting district, offering opportunities for diverse people and interest groups in the neighborhood to meet and connect. The sponsoring association comprises more than 12 clubs and community initiatives from the fields of culture, social services, ecology, employment, and sports. The spectrum ranges from daycare centers and employment and training providers to housing and employment opportunities for people with disabilities, a sports club, cultural organizations, and an event center operated by the sponsoring association itself.
Huchting is located in the southwest of Bremen. The districts of Kirchhuchting, Sodenmatt, and parts of Mittelshuchting, with their respective focus areas, are designated as part of the WiN and Social City program areas. The district has approximately 29,500 inhabitants, with around 8,600 living in the immediate vicinity of the bus… The bus… is surrounded by apartment buildings from the 1960s and 70s and single-family homes. The proportion of people with a migration background in the district, based on the focus areas, is over 40%, while the average age is higher than the Bremen state average.
Integration & Tolerance
From the very beginning, integration and tolerance have been central to the collaboration of all services and all people living and working on the premises. This explains how, despite the diverse tasks and interests of the associations and initiatives, a strong community has been able to form and maintain itself for so many years. The common thread has always been mutual tolerance and interest in others, which is also openly extended to every visitor of bus…
The themes of "disadvantage and equal opportunities" have remained the defining focus of bus… throughout the years. Thus, people with a migration background, as well as single mothers and fathers, so-called IN-Jobbers, and, last but not least, the people with disabilities who live and work at bus…, find services tailored to their needs.
The main goal of the bus… is and remains to offer all people in the neighborhood and beyond access to its diverse programs, regardless of gender, skin color, origin, or social status, and to welcome them all. This
commitment to equal participation on the premises is clearly reflected in the bylaws of the sponsoring association. All member associations, regardless of size, have equal voting rights. Thus, influence on decisions is not dependent on the size of a member association.
