District: Gröpelingen

The plan for a “neighborhood house” originated from contacts that the Arbeiterwohlfahrt Deutschland (Workers' Welfare Association of Germany) had established with the Unitarian Service Committee (USC) social welfare organization in the USA shortly after the end of the war.

The free religious social welfare organization had independently developed the idea of building a neighborhood center in Germany based on American models, thereby contributing to the democratic renewal of Germany.

Today, the Helene Kaisen neighborhood center offers numerous services for all people in the district.

Meeting center

The community center in the neighborhood house provides a meeting place, as well as rooms and services for older people, in which their need for information, advice, physical exercise, communication, activity and participation in social and cultural life is met.

The center provides support for daily living and social participation, taking intergenerational aspects into account. Volunteer work, cooperation, and networking with other institutions and initiatives in the neighborhood are also key aspects of the community center's activities.
