The TuSch groups are intended to empower children whose parents have separated
Children helping children
'TuSch' is an abbreviation for separation and divorce. Children of separated parents often have to cope with difficult and different challenges than their peers whose parents live together. Therefore, it can be very relieving and helpful to talk to other children who are going through something similar.
In this way, children learn how others cope with their parents' separation, what can help them cope, and they discover that separation can often have a positive side. They realize: Others are going through the same thing as me; I am not alone in this situation.
A neutral and protected space for feelings and thoughts
At our weekly meetings, we aim to create an atmosphere where children can strengthen their self-esteem. Through creative methods, the children playfully discover ways to better understand their new family situation. The group provides a safe space where children can express their opinions without worrying that these will be shared with their parents and that they might hurt family members.
But it is equally important to have a place where the children can simply be carefree and exuberant again: playing and having fun are also important parts of the group meetings.
The TuSch groups are designed for boys and girls aged 5 to 12 and are led by experienced professionals who are also available to the children as neutral discussion partners.
The groups meet weekly for 1.5 hours over a period of approximately five months. After a single trial session, each child decides for themselves whether they wish to commit to participating in the group. The group program is structured into sequential thematic modules. At the beginning and end of the program, a joint meeting is held with the child, their parents, and the staff.
