Requesting more childcare hours:
Are you planning to start a job or vocational training? Or become self-employed? Then suddenly you have less time for your own children. Contact us and we will provide you with a certificate for the time you need additional childcare – you can present this to your daycare center or to PiB-Pflegekinder in Bremen (PiB is an agency for foster care and childminding services). With this certificate, you have the following options:
- If your child already has a childcare place: If your child is already in a nursery, daycare center, or after-school program, you can extend and adjust the childcare hours. Simply present the certificate (which we will provide) to the facility.
- If your child doesn't yet have a childcare place (or if the hours aren't sufficient): Finding a childminder is another option – submit the certificate to PiB (Foster Children in Bremen). Is your income insufficient to cover the costs of a childminder? Support is available (see "Financial Support for Childcare").
Financial support for childcare
Do you need additional childcare, but your income isn't enough? There are various options for financial support with childcare:
- Flat-rate allowance for children requiring supervision: Are you currently participating in vocational training? Apply for the flat-rate allowance for your children who need care at the Bremen Job Center.
- Childcare cost assistance: If the flat-rate allowance is insufficient, you can apply to the Social Services Office. The Social Services Office will then help you by covering the childcare costs – more information is available there.
- Childminding subsidy: If you don't have enough money to pay a childminder, you can submit an application to the Social Services Office. The Social Services Office can then help you and cover part of the costs – more information is available there.
Cost coverage if you need help finding a job (activation and vocational integration measures): Sometimes, for example, you need to complete training to find a new job. Are you currently receiving support from the Job Center to help you find work again? And do you need help with childcare during this time? In some cases, the Job Center can help you pay for this childcare.
For expectant mothers – financial support & advice
Are you pregnant? And currently receiving citizen's allowance? Or are you a student, trainee, or low-income earner (without entitlement to citizen's allowance)? Then the job center can help you with additional support:
- Additional needs allowance (supplement to basic income): If you are pregnant, you usually need more money than usual. From the 12th week of your pregnancy, you can apply to the job center for additional income – this is called additional needs allowance and is paid in addition to your basic income allowance. You will need to provide proof from a doctor that you are indeed pregnant.
- Maternity clothing allowance: Do you need money for new clothes during your pregnancy? Then you can submit an application to the job center.
- Initial equipment allowance (lump sum): Do you need money for the initial equipment for your newborn child? Then you can submit an application to the job center.
Further benefits after birth: You will also receive further benefits after the birth of your child. You must apply for these benefits:
- Parental allowance
- Child benefit
- Child support advance (if you are a single parent and the father does not pay child support)
That's quite a lot of different services! We're happy to help and advise you. Speak to your personal contact person at the Bremen Job Center or call us at 0421/56 60 0.

Project FRIDA! – Women in the Workplace
The FRIDA! project aims to identify the problems women face when searching for and working. We then want to reduce and solve these problems.
It is often more difficult for women to find a job and keep it long-term. There are various reasons for this. One example is a lack of childcare places. Women and men can have difficulty finding work without a school leaving certificate or vocational training. However, women often face greater difficulties when they want to learn or practice a profession.
We have assembled a team for five years to mentor, guide, and support women. Each team member mentors a small group of women. These women support the teams throughout the application process. Various measures will be implemented for this purpose, such as:
- newly designed premises
- dedicated rooms for events and job application training
- alternative forms of care (e.g., off-site consultations)
A quick overview of all financial support options in Bremen
There is a guide for single parents in Bremen. This guide provides an overview of all available financial support. You will learn what benefits are available, what requirements must be met, and where to apply for financial assistance. Different offices and institutions are responsible for this. The guide was published by the Central Office of the State Women's Representatives (ZGF).
