This year's World Breastfeeding Week highlights the potential of breast milk. With the ability to breastfeed, women not only have the unique opportunity to optimally nourish their child: breast milk supports the child's overall development and protects the health of both mother and child.
Under the motto of this year's World Breastfeeding Week, "Breastfeeding. Your superpower.", the Healthy Start – Young Family Network and its 53 partner institutions are promoting the creation of the best possible conditions for breastfeeding and providing early information to enable all families to make self-determined decisions.
"Breastfeeding. Your Superpower." is the motto of World Breastfeeding Week, taking place from September 28 to October 4, 2026. This week of action promotes the idea that women can use this power for themselves and their children. Breastfeeding goes far beyond optimal nutrition. It fosters a close bond between mother and child and protects the health of both. It's also practical, as breast milk is always available and at the perfect temperature.
Ideally, women receive information and advice on breastfeeding and infant nutrition as part of prenatal care and childbirth preparation. After birth, doctors, midwives, nurses, and early intervention specialists support families according to their individual needs. They address questions and concerns, work with women to find resource-oriented solutions, respect their decisions, and strive to remove structural barriers.
A broad alliance is advocating for breastfeeding and improving the framework for breastfeeding in Germany: On behalf of the Federal Government, the Healthy Start – Young Family Network, with its 53 partner institutions, is raising awareness about breastfeeding during World Breastfeeding Week and promoting individualized breastfeeding support that fosters self-determination. These communication measures are part of the National Strategy for Breastfeeding Promotion, which aims to improve the framework for breastfeeding and make Germany more breastfeeding-friendly.
