  • In Bremen, childcare registration is done centrally and online via the Bremen childcare portal. Your child must be at least 1 year old (for nursery) or 3 years old (for kindergarten) and you must reside in the city of Bremen.

  • The registration deadline for kindergarten start dates in August is January 31st. Later registrations are possible, but there are often waiting lists. Registration for places during the year (e.g., due to relocation or return from parental leave) is possible year-round, but it becomes more difficult to secure a place later.

  • The daycare centers will contact you from March/April onwards to let you know if you have been offered a place. You must confirm the place in writing, otherwise it will be forfeited. If your application is rejected, you will remain on the waiting list or can choose another option.

  • In Bremen, childcare has been free for children aged 3 to 6 since 2018. This means that once your child turns 3, you don't have to pay any fees for childcare in a public daycare center. However, additional costs may apply, for example, for lunch, field trips, or materials. These costs vary from daycare center to daycare center.

  • Bremen has many public playgrounds, playgroups, play circles, and parks, as well as children's and family centers offering a variety of activities. Depending on the time of year, there are also seasonal offers and events, such as those at children's and youth farms or indoor playgrounds.

  • Make an appointment at your pediatrician's office and explain what you've noticed. If a special educational need is identified, there are various support services, counseling centers, and specialists who can assist families, such as early intervention centers.

  • You can contact family centers, family support services, early intervention programs, or parenting advice centers. All offer free, confidential, and unconditional advice.
