Center for Addiction and Sexual Health

AIDS-Hilfe Bremen eV was founded in 1985. Today we have approximately 20 to 30 visitors daily who either seek open counseling and/or have a rapid test performed.

We currently support 22 people in the "Assisted Living" project and 10 people in the "Intensive Supported Living" project. Approximately 50-60 people seek our open consultation hours each month. Telephone consultations are used about 10 times daily, and we also conduct 2-6 online consultations per day. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have limited our consultation services to telephone and email contact only.

In cooperation with various housing associations, we arrange housing in approximately 20 cases per year on average, providing financial assistance in many instances and also disbursing funds from our own resources via the crisis fund (Jörg Bühnemann Fund). We conduct an average of 20 school outreach events and 6-8 training courses for other organizations annually and maintain a public presence at various prevention events.

In 2004, the Bremen Senate completely cut funding to AIDS-Hilfe Bremen. The importance of an institution that serves all affected groups equally, providing support and education, is undisputed. We are constantly working on new approaches to reach those who no longer feel addressed by the prevention strategies and measures from the 1980s and 90s that are still prevalent in some cases.

Furthermore, our uncomplicated rapid testing procedure leads to more people getting tested for sexually transmitted diseases who previously did not feel addressed by other testing offers in Bremen.

We provide support and advice:

  • Men who have sex with men (MSM)
  • openly homosexual as well as unouted men and women
  • Heterosexual men and women
  • Transgender
  • Migrants
  • People with a history of drug use
  • People with multiple infections
  • People with psychiatric diagnoses
  • People with Hepatitis A/B/C

AIDS-Hilfe Bremen e.V. conducts numerous public awareness campaigns. These take place in schools, workplaces, youth centers, the gay and party scene, on the street, at health fairs, and anywhere else we are invited and where there is a need for education. Since we receive no government funding, we only hold events in government-run facilities for a fee.
