On these patient pages of the Bremen Chamber of Psychotherapists (PKHB), we would like to provide you with some helpful answers. Here you will find information to give you an initial overview and suggestions on what you can do if you would like professional treatment. The PKHB patient pages are a guide; however, you will not find counseling or therapy here.
If you would like to schedule a personal consultation with a psychotherapist, this is possible through a so-called "psychotherapeutic consultation hour." Detailed information can be found in the brochure. If you would like to know how best to schedule an appointment in Bremen, you can find information here.
When is psychotherapy advisable?
This question isn't so easy to answer. Everyone experiences mental health issues. Everyone encounters various crises throughout their life. Often, many people manage to overcome these crises without professional help. The human psyche possesses remarkable self-healing powers. Many people have family and friends who can effectively support them in this process.
Sometimes, however, it takes weeks or months to regain stability on one's own or through conversations with a partner or friend. The psychological problems persist and often develop a negative momentum of their own, which is difficult for the individual to break free from alone. In such cases, it might be helpful to consult a psychotherapist and discuss in a personal consultation whether treatment is advisable.
Sometimes mental illnesses aren't so easy to recognize. You might manage to avoid the difficult feelings. A friend goes shopping for you at the department store, whose hustle and bustle repeatedly triggers panic attacks – and suddenly the overwhelming fear of crowds is no longer noticeable. Nevertheless, the underlying mental disorder can continue to deepen and become chronic. Therefore, even with occasional but recurring unusual feelings, it can be worthwhile to talk to a psychotherapist. Below are some "First Questions to Ask Yourself" that can further help you clarify what's going on and whether it's advisable to seek professional support.
Finding a psychotherapy appointment
Psychotherapists with health insurance accreditation offer weekly psychotherapeutic consultation hours, designed to provide timely initial access to psychotherapy. These consultations are intended to conduct an initial diagnostic assessment and, if necessary, provide information about various treatment and counseling options.
As part of an individualized patient information session, those seeking help receive guidance on whether and which support services are recommended. Each practice also guarantees telephone availability for scheduling appointments, typically between 100 and 200 minutes per week.
You can find the opening hours of the individual practices at www.kv-hb.de under >Doctor search >Psychotherapists.
If you require treatment and cannot find an option through direct contact with licensed psychotherapists, you can also contact the appointment service of the Bremen Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians. They will arrange appointments for consultations and, if necessary, for acute treatment or an initial assessment session with psychotherapists. You can here . However, the appointment service does not allow you to choose a specific psychotherapist, nor do you have any influence on the location or time of your appointment.
Tips for finding a psychotherapist:
1. Your chances of securing a therapy appointment increase if you take the time to call the psychotherapists during their office hours. These are often announced on their answering machine, and you can also find them at www.kvhb.de (see point 3!).
People with names later in the alphabet are called less frequently, so your chances are higher.
If you are offered the option to leave your phone number, make sure you are reachable at that number or that you have an answering machine.
2. Bremen Chamber of Psychotherapists Search engine: www.psych-info.de
Under “Advanced Search” you can select the following boxes:
a) “Health insurance coverage”: Psychotherapists with health insurance accreditation
b) “Private practice”: Psychotherapists who treat privately insured patients and often also work on a reimbursement basis .
3. Finding a therapy place at www.kvhb.de
There you can find all psychotherapists approved by health insurance funds and the times when their practices are available via the >Doctor search > Psychotherapists section.
4. List of psychotherapists in the local telephone book
a) List of psychological psychotherapists in the state of Bremen with a contract with the public health insurance system
b) List of licensed psychological psychotherapists in private practice (privately insured, self-pay, reimbursement)
5. Alternatively: Counseling centers.
Detailed lists of counseling services in Bremen and Bremerhaven can be found at www.pk-hb.de >Patients and those seeking advice >Counseling services
6. For emergencies: Social Psychiatric Treatment Centers.
In urgent cases or severe crises, you can also contact the Social Psychiatric Treatment Center. The center responsible is the one in whose area you reside. (However, they do not psychotherapy appointments !)
