Church meeting place for people in material, physical or emotional distress
It was founded in 1989 as a registered association by several Protestant and Catholic parishes in the city center and is still largely financed by donations and support from the House of the Church as well as by membership fees.
In Bremen, a growing number of citizens are living below the poverty line and often can no longer afford a hot meal. From Tuesday to Saturday, our facility welcomes approximately 60 to 90 guests daily. A total of about 48 volunteers, kitchen staff, and the deacon-led director ensure the well-being of our guests.
In addition to meals, visitors have the opportunity to shower and do laundry, among other things. Many of them also take advantage of the opportunity for pastoral care or social and diaconal counseling.
Why we exist
In a time marked by unemployment and social cuts, but also by hectic lifestyles and performance pressure, more and more people need support to prevent them from falling completely through the social safety net. Poverty is increasing and has many faces. This led to the founding of the Bremer Treff (Bremen Meeting Place) in 1989 through a joint initiative of the five Bremen Old Town parishes.
Today, 13 municipalities and church institutions are among the sponsors. In addition, numerous Bremen residents are involved with the Bremen Meeting Place. They are all united by the idea of Christian charity – incidentally, across denominational boundaries. Through their willingness to help, they bear witness to God's love for humanity.
