Parental allowance is a benefit for parents of infants and toddlers. It replaces part of the lost income if you want to be there for your child after birth and interrupt or reduce your professional work.

Parental allowance is paid not for calendar months, but for the child's months of life. The first month of life begins on the day of birth. Parental allowance is also available to parents who had no income before the birth.

Parental allowance comes in three variants:

• Basic parental allowance
• Parental Allowance Plus
• Partnership bonus

Parental allowance plus and the partnership bonus offer particular support if you share paid work and family responsibilities equally after the birth of your child. Single parents can also apply for these various options. Parental allowance is also available for adopted children and children in foster care.

As parents, you can decide who receives parental allowance and for what period. In the application, you must specify for which months of your child's life you wish to claim parental allowance and which parental allowance option you choose.

An application for parental allowance can be submitted from the day of the child's birth until the child reaches 18 months of age. Parental allowance is granted retroactively for a maximum of three months prior to the month of application. The application period is extended for premature babies.
