Bremen Chamber of Commerce

The Bremen Chamber of Commerce – IHK for Bremen and Bremerhaven – is a driving force, a source of ideas, and a catalyst for the state of Bremen, the Northwest Metropolitan Region, and the people who work here. It stands for a high level of economic and social commitment. All businesses in Bremen and Bremerhaven are members of the Chamber of Commerce. These approximately 53,000 companies regularly elect their industry representatives to the "Plenary," the highest body of the Chamber, which represents their democratic interests.

The Chamber of Commerce not only stands for political influence, but also serves as a service-oriented provider for businesses at its two locations in Bremen and Bremerhaven: This includes consulting for start-ups, further training, assistance with legal matters, and much more. The Chamber of Commerce efficiently and customer-friendly performs a wide range of official duties: Among other things, it issues customs documents, reviews development plans, conducts professional qualification examinations, and appoints expert witnesses.

Vocational training is both a core task and a social responsibility for the young people of Bremen in the state of Bremen. The Chamber organizes dual vocational training as well as numerous continuing education programs, from initial consultations to examinations. Of its approximately 4,930 volunteer members, 4,330 serve on examination boards.

In Bremen, economic self-governance has a tradition spanning over five hundred years. As early as 1451, Bremen's merchants established guidelines for representing their interests to the council in a statute – thus, the oldest evidence of economic self-organization in Germany. In Bremerhaven, such representation has existed since 1867.
