District: Neustadt

The Schwankhalle Bremen is a performance and production venue for the independent performing arts.

The building, located on the site of the former Remmer Brewery in Bremen's Neustadt district, opened in 2003 and was operated and used by various actors and associations from the Bremen scene until summer 2015. Since its reopening under new management in September 2015, the Schwankhalle has served as a laboratory and workspace for local, national, and international projects and collaborations.

The new concept builds on the idea and tradition of an artists' house that gives artists time, space and support for transdisciplinary and self-determined research, training and development in an inspiring environment.

The Schwankhalle has two fully equipped theaters with seating capacities of 120 and 80 seats respectively, rehearsal stages, and a guest apartment. Since 2012, the sponsoring association Neugier eV, as operator and organizer, has received institutional funding of €793,465 annually from the Bremen Senator for Culture.

The Schwankhalle is supported by Sparkasse Bremen and cambio. It is part of Freischwimmen, NFT, vis-a-vis Neustadt, LafdK Bremen, Clubverstärker eV and cooperates with klangpol.

The age and language of the visitors are irrelevant. For the afternoon performances, the foyer of the Schwankhalle is now transformed into a living room; for just five euros admission, visitors can enjoy coffee, cake, and music with the DJ set format "The Jukebox-Thing".

The program primarily targets children and young people. Project funding through the "Culture Makes You Strong/Alliances for Education" program of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research makes even more possible.
