We want to counteract disadvantages caused by a lack of basic education and support people in taking advantage of their opportunities for participation and shaping their own lives.
Literacy is an important, but not the only, part of basic education. The term "basic education" encompasses many other aspects of our lives. It includes skills that enable us to shape our own lives, act autonomously, and make decisions.
It is important to us that deficits in basic education have nothing to do with a lack of educational opportunities. We are committed to addressing and raising awareness of this issue in the public sphere.
These are our tasks:
1. Approaching people
We advise and actively reach out to people with basic education needs. We conduct training for staff, volunteers, and trusted individuals so they can better identify, approach, and inform people with low literacy skills.
2. Develop offer formats
Together with primary education stakeholders in Bremen, we are developing new programs that connect with the everyday lives of those affected and take their needs into account. This includes initiating and testing pilot projects: among other things, programs in the community, parent education, and low-threshold, informal formats.
3. Qualifications for teachers
We train and provide professional development for teachers in the field of literacy and basic education. To this end, we design and conduct training courses on the topics of literacy and basic education.
4. Public Relations
We want to raise awareness about literacy and basic education, destigmatize it, and provide information.
5. Networking of the actors
We support the exchange of information on relevant developments, research results and best-practice examples in order to jointly develop measures that build upon or complement each other.
We are also a point of contact for authorities, educational institutions, advice centers, networks and associations that are already involved in basic education or want to deal with the topic in more detail in the future.
Since October 1, 2021, the Basic Education and Literacy Service Center has been located at the Protestant Adult Education Center. Two and a half staff positions are funded for this purpose over a three-year period using funds from the European Social Fund.
This project is funded by the Senator for Economic Affairs, Labour and Europe using funds from the state and the European Social Fund Plus.
