For young people from Bremen and the surrounding area between 16 and 23 years old
The transition to adulthood can sometimes be particularly stressful. Young people experience their first relationships and breakups, face pressure to perform, and grapple with uncertain futures. Some drop out of school or vocational training, isolate themselves from their parents and friends, and turn to substance abuse. It is precisely in such stressful situations that mental health conditions can develop, manifest for the first time, or become entrenched. In such cases, inpatient treatment is sometimes advisable. Since 2021, the Bremen-East Clinic has offered the first psychiatric-psychotherapeutic ward specifically for young adults aged 16 to 23 from Bremen and the surrounding area.
The "Adolescent Ward – Ward for Adolescents and Young Adults" is a collaborative project of the Clinic for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics, the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, and the Clinic for Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy. Emotional, depressive, anxious, or incipient psychotic disorders, as well as difficulties in social interaction and personality development that hinder the transition to independence and adulthood, can be more thoroughly diagnosed and treated on the ward within this therapeutic setting.
The focus is on supporting young people on their journey of identity formation and the development of autonomy. Fifteen treatment places are available for this purpose in a separate building (House 1). However, a prerequisite is that the adolescents are motivated to undergo therapy and can participate voluntarily, as Ward 1A is an open ward.
The ward concept offers, within the framework of inpatient psychiatric and psychotherapeutic treatment, a child and adolescent psychiatric setting with educational support in daily life and milieu therapy, family therapy, and connection to the hospital school. On the other hand, it also incorporates adult psychiatric expertise tailored to the age and disorders of adolescents, as well as interfaces with occupational therapy and the transition to working life. In doing so, we adhere to the guidelines of both professional associations.
Admission is planned via a waiting list. Registration for an initial consultation and assessment of suitability is handled by the outpatient clinic of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (Tel. 408-2677) until the age of majority; for adults, registration is handled by the Clinic for Psychosomatic Medicine (Tel. 408-2102).
