Child supplement – what is it?
The child supplement is a benefit for low-income families. Parents can only receive the child supplement if they earn enough for themselves, but their income is insufficient or barely sufficient for their entire family.
The existing family benefit, the child supplement (KiZ), supports families where the parents' income is insufficient to support the entire family. The scope of the child supplement was expanded last year with the Strong Families Act; approximately 2 million children are now eligible because their parents have low incomes.
This can mean up to an additional 185 euros per month per child.

Emergency child allowance during the Corona crisis
The spread of the coronavirus is posing major organizational and financial problems for many families: due to daycare and school closures, parents have to organize childcare themselves, are unable to work full-time, are on reduced hours, or are experiencing significant income losses due to a lack of orders. Federal Family Minister Dr. Franziska Giffey is therefore launching an emergency child supplement for low-income families.
Previously, the average income of the last six months served as the basis for calculation. For the emergency child supplement (KiZ), the calculation period is now being significantly shortened. Starting in April, families applying for the KiZ will no longer need to provide proof of income for the last six months, but only for the month immediately preceding the application. This regulation is intended to be in effect until September 30, 2020.
Parents should therefore check whether they are entitled to the child supplement. Alongside short-time work compensation, which is higher for families than for those without children, and the regulations on continued payment of wages when daycare centers or schools are closed, the child supplement is an important component in protecting families from the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.
for calculating the emergency child supplement (KiZ
) will be, from April 1, 2020 to September 30, 2020, the income of the last month before the application, and no longer the average of the previous six months. Applicants must provide proof of their income using the income statement for the month before the application.
The "Digital Child Supplement" has made access to the benefit faster and less bureaucratic. This is particularly important during the coronavirus pandemic, as parents no longer need to submit their application in person at the family benefits office. An online application assistant, with its numerous convenient features, eliminates the need to visit the office and supports parents throughout the application process.
Important note:
Please be aware that even with the announced change in the law due to the Corona crisis, an income check will take place and therefore, contrary to statements on social media, not every family will receive child allowance without further checks .
We therefore strongly recommend that you always check the requirements with the “KiZ-Lotsen” before submitting your application and then “to the online application” submit an application
