The Bremen State Institute for Schools (LIS) is an institution of the Senator for Children and Education of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. It offers professional and pedagogical services for specialists and managers responsible for education in schools. In addition, the LIS performs municipal tasks for the city of Bremen.
The LIS's core tasks include the training of trainee teachers as well as the professional development, qualification, and consultation of teachers, educational specialists, administrators, and school leaders. The LIS supports schools in school and curriculum development processes and promotes the professional development of teams and individuals, including through supervision, coaching, and consultation.
The professional development program covers numerous pedagogical and subject-specific topics. These include, among others, inclusive and intercultural education, language development, social learning, political education, career guidance, health and addiction prevention, all-day schooling, education for sustainable development, and leadership training. Offerings include centralized and school-based professional development courses, workshops, seminars, observation opportunities, as well as digital and hybrid formats.
Furthermore, the LIS develops educational plans, frameworks, and quality assurance tools, and provides media and materials for teaching and learning processes in schools. It advises the education department and collaborates with external partners as well as Bremen-based and regional institutions. Its aim is to sustainably improve the quality of schools and teaching and to strengthen educational professionals in their work.
