Children and young people who regularly take on caregiving responsibilities for family members are referred to as young carers. In the state of Bremen, this is estimated to affect several thousand young people. However, their caregiving responsibilities often go unnoticed in everyday life. Professionals in education, social work, counseling, health, and care can play a crucial role in identifying young carers, reaching out to them, and connecting them with appropriate support.
To raise awareness of the situation of young caregivers and increase the visibility of the issue, the Senator for Health, Women and Consumer Protection published new informational materials in July 2026. An eight-page brochure entitled "DO YOU CARE: Information and Tips for Young Heroes Managing Family Life" is available, supplemented by posters and postcards. These materials can be used by professionals and institutions to specifically address young people with caregiving responsibilities, draw attention to their unique situation, and facilitate access to support.

AG Young Carer Bremen – Networking skilled workers for better support
Founded in 2024, the Young Carer Bremen Working Group advocates for greater visibility and awareness, as well as the further development of support services for affected children and young people. The working group welcomes additional professionals and interested individuals who wish to participate in developing support services for young carers in the state of Bremen.
