The Bremen Protest Working Group is an alliance of disabled and non-disabled people as well as organizations by and for disabled people.
Since 1993, the members of the working group have been preparing the content and organization of the annual Bremen Protest Day against discrimination of disabled people. Hence, the original name was: Bremen Protest Day Working Group.
Over the years, the working group came to the realization that it is not enough to make a loud appearance only once a year on the day of protest. Rather, it is important to urge politicians throughout the year to address the demands of people with disabilities.
This realization also led to a change in the working group's self-understanding: It no longer sees its tasks solely as preparing the day of protest, but rather as advocating for the equality of disabled people in Bremen – and the day of protest is one tool among others for this purpose. To reflect this externally, the group changed its name. The Bremen Protest Day Working Group became the Bremen Protest Working Group against Discrimination and for Equality of Disabled People, or simply: the Bremen Protest Working Group.
Over the years, the working group has developed into a permanent fixture of the disability self-help movement. On average, 20-25 people from a wide variety of organizations or those with a personal interest participate in the monthly meetings. The working group members address all conceivable issues facing disability self-help and are responsible for the organizational and substantive preparation of the annual protest day.
Anyone who would like to participate in the working group in the future should contact the LAGS office so that they can be invited to the meetings.
