The Bremen foster care placements were established in 1997 as a network of four Bremen youth welfare institutions. The focus was on the fact that existing youth welfare services were not sufficiently differentiated for a growing group of children and young people. The Bremen foster care placements thus filled the gap between residential group work and foster care.

The collaborative approach has significantly contributed to the fact that Bremen's foster care placements are now an important component of the diverse youth welfare services in Bremen. Crucially, the institutions have pooled resources in the best interests of the children and young people, thus creating a structure that enables targeted and effective foster care work.

In foster care facilities, we offer children and young people who are to be placed in care according to § 34 SGB VIII a professional care service in a family setting as an alternative to traditional residential care.

The "Bremen Foster Care Placements" see themselves as a regional provider of this youth welfare service. These are so-called "home placements." One or two children can be accommodated in a foster care placement.
