Individual counselling on the topic of intersexuality / DSD / physical variations of sex characteristics M/F/D
Inter*Beratung Bremen offers independent, respectful, open-ended, anonymous, and free counseling on equal terms regarding all questions related to variations in sex development. We advise both affected individuals and their parents, relatives, and professionals who encounter inter* issues in their work.
Sexual orientation: male, female, diverse, or open? For a long time, the prevailing view was that our society could be clearly divided into male and female people. But nature is more diverse, doesn't always draw precise lines, and often exhibits fluid transitions, and the human body can display characteristics of different sexes. Some of these characteristics are visible, others can only be detected in a laboratory. Sometimes there is a medical diagnosis, sometimes not.
In all these cases, the term used is intersex, or in Latin, inter* and intersexuality. In a medical context, the terms intersexuality, DSD, or variations in sex development are used.
Since 2013, people who cannot be clearly classified as male or female are not required to register their sex status, and their entry remains blank. Since 2018, people with a documented "variant of sex development" have had the option of registering as "diverse," in addition to the option of leaving their sex status blank as it was in 2013.
There is a wide variety of physical variations in sex characteristics, as well as different physical developments and medical terms. Often, only the questions that parents or the individuals themselves ask are the same.
We want to help you find the right answers for you and offer advice based on human rights principles. Free of charge, anonymously and without obligation.
