So that young people can get through the night safely

The "Night Walkers" project was initiated by a group of interested adults, parents, and representatives of various organizations and institutions. It was based on an existing Night Walkers project in Sweden.

The night walkers want…

  • be present without being intrusive
  • To calm people in stressful situations without taking sides
  • Show courage where others look away

The project enjoys great acceptance and appreciation among young people.

“Night hiking” – what is that?

We night walkers move around in small groups on Friday and Saturday nights in various places and streets in Bremen-North.
Self-understanding and rules.

We night walkers want to do something for young people, and we feel we can offer them valuable support with relatively little effort. We want to make sure they don't feel alone at night. And as a bonus, we also get to know many nice people – both in our group and on our walks.

Volunteering and voluntary work

We place particular emphasis on the fact that participation in the Night Hikers is entirely voluntary and unpaid. Those who wish to join can sign up for their desired hikes – whether once a month or once a year, it's entirely up to them; the group does not intend to exert any pressure.

If not enough hikers can be found for a particular evening, the hike will be cancelled. Therefore, we want to recruit as many adults as possible for our project so that a group of volunteers can be out on the trails every Friday and Saturday.

We are here for you

Wherever possible, all planning and decisions are made within our group by consensus. Voluntariness, unpaid work, and the principle of consensus are so important to us because we are convinced that this creates a positive influence on young people.

What is a typical hiking trip like?

We meet at the community center "Dünenwind." Over coffee, tea, water, and cookies, the other hikers gradually arrive, and we discuss the route of the upcoming hike. Then we set off on foot or by public bus. One of us has written an account of his first night hike.

We often encounter young people who are curious about us and our cause and seek to talk to us. This often leads to pleasant conversations, and many an anecdote has emerged. Some tense situations have been defused simply by our presence, and we have provided assistance in various ways. Quite a few young people now know us and greet us warmly.

We'll stop at our "base camp" from time to time to refuel and discuss our next steps. Finally, we'll briefly review the events at our meeting point, and then everyone will head home.
