So that young people can get through the night safely
As part of the Night Walkers project, adults are out on the streets of Bremen and Stuhr at night on weekends to be there for young people as contact persons, to mediate in disputes and to show courage where others look away – so that young people can get through the night safely.
The aim is to provide young people with a sense of security – for example, on their way to a club, to a friend's house, or home. The night patrols also want to make young people feel they are not alone with their problems. They repeatedly find that many young people are very surprised that there are adults who take the time to listen and address their problems in conversation.
Night patrollers can be identified by their uniform clothing bearing the "Night Patroller" logo. Safety is their top priority during their volunteer work. Therefore, they never patrol alone, but always as a team – everyone looks out for each other. Night patrollers do not intervene directly in conflicts, but rather try to calm difficult situations.
To ensure participants are well-prepared for the night patrols, the project offers special courses such as de-escalation training and first aid to all interested individuals. The night patrol participants meet once a month in their respective neighborhoods to exchange experiences and opinions.
The idea of night walkers originated in Scandinavia. The first German group was formed in Bremen North in 2004. It has served as a model for approximately 30 groups that have since formed throughout Germany. These groups maintain an exchange across national borders and organize regular meetings.
In Bremen and Stuhr there are six groups with currently about 50 volunteer night hikers.
