A midwife accompanies families through a special phase of life: from pregnancy through the postpartum period and into the child's first year. However, many expectant parents find it difficult to find a midwife. The midwifery centers in Bremen provide additional support and offer local services for families.
The midwifery centers provide care for pregnant women, (expectant) parents and families with babies who live in one of the following districts of Bremen:
- Gröpelingen, Walle
- Hemelingen, Vahr, Osterholz,
- Obervieland, Huchting, Woltmershausen
- Vegesack, Burglesum, Blumenthal
Important to know: Midwifery centers do not attend the birth itself. And: Midwifery services are covered by your statutory health insurance.
In every midwifery center, freelance midwives work together as a team, offering a wide range of services related to pregnancy, childbirth, and the early days with the baby. Each midwifery center provides families with a dedicated point of contact before and after birth – offering consultations, office hours, support groups, and classes. The following services are available:
Before birth:
- Prenatal care and advice on all health-related questions
- Support for discomfort during pregnancy
After birth:
- Postpartum care
- Breastfeeding and nutrition advice and support in everyday life with the baby
- childbirth preparation courses
- Postnatal exercise classes
What is special about a midwifery center?
The centers were specifically established in neighborhoods where midwifery care was previously inadequate. Families should have easy access to midwifery services, regardless of their circumstances. A key feature is:
- Local support: The services are located directly in the neighborhoods and are easily accessible.
- Low-threshold access: Families can easily get advice and find suitable support.
- Multilingual support: Interpreters can be used if needed to ensure successful communication and consultation.
- Additional family services: In addition to midwifery care, there are courses and information about life with a baby, as well as information on other services in the district.
