The FUGE project of AfJ eV qualifies and places volunteer helpers in families with a chronically ill child (e.g. type 1 diabetes) to provide relief in everyday life.
The volunteers accompany the chronically ill children, as well as their healthy siblings, to sports training or leisure activities, with homework, playtime, and meals, or they look after the children in the evening. Together with the AfJ eV counseling center, group meetings with peers are organized for the affected children and young people, and parents have the opportunity to get to know each other and exchange experiences at events while their children are cared for by FUGE volunteers.
Currently, we have around ten competent and experienced volunteers active with us. They attend a preparatory qualification course and are supported through regular meetings, training sessions, and individual advice on all matters.
The service is free.
It is recognized as "support in everyday life" according to § 45 a SGB XI (long-term care insurance) and can be subsidized through this.
Goals of our assistance:
- Mothers and fathers can finally think about their own needs again and recharge their batteries.
- The children are given the opportunity to regularly participate in leisure and sports activities.
- Medically prescribed therapies are reliably implemented in everyday life – even by parents who do not understand the German language well.
- Sick children and teenagers have an additional caregiver with whom they can talk and have fun.
- Mothers and fathers can give all their children equal attention and affection.
- Affected families make contact with each other and exchange information.
