The perception of child protection as a societal and governmental responsibility was the focus of the 2nd Bremen Child Protection Conference. Around 150 specialists and managers from the administration, as well as representatives from independent organizations, the judiciary, the police, the healthcare sector, academia, and policy experts, gathered in the ceremonial hall of the Bremen Parliament.

Structures are reaching their limits

The aim of the conference was professional exchange as well as the further development and strengthening of existing collaborations. "Child protection is a shared responsibility. That's why it's a strong signal to me that so many professionals from different fields are coming together for the 2nd Child Protection Conference," said Dr. Claudia Schilling, Senator for Labor, Social Affairs, Youth and Integration. Especially in the context of domestic violence and neglect, existing structures repeatedly reach their limits, and children and young people who witness violence or experience neglect often find themselves caught between different systems.

Taking responsibility – especially where things get complex

To improve this situation, the conference is an important starting point, the senator emphasized. "Child protection means taking responsibility, especially where things get complex. We will bring together and systematically evaluate the findings from practice, research, and the systems involved." Based on the discussion results, statewide recommendations for action and further professional steps will be developed in the future.
