Bremen Central Office for the Realization of Gender Equality (ZGF)

Inform, change, network: The Central Office of the State Women's Representative (ZGF) is an agency of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. Its legal mandate is to monitor and work towards ensuring that the constitutional requirement of equality is fulfilled in the state of Bremen.

To this end, the ZGF develops measures to reduce disadvantages faced by women and girls. In doing so, it takes into account their diverse life realities, in which various forms of discrimination can converge.

A key part of the ZGF's work involves reviewing political and administrative actions regarding their impact on women and girls and ensuring that women's perspectives are included in decision-making processes. The ZGF advocates for the implementation of laws and legislation that benefit women and girls and informs the public about women's policy issues to give weight to these concerns. Furthermore, it supports, connects, and informs women's institutions, initiatives, and organizations.

Tasks of the ZGF

  • takes a stand on political and administrative projects in order to exert its influence in favor of women and girls
  • It proposes measures at the municipal, state and federal levels to improve the situation of women and to sustainably change structures
  • works in a broad network of committees with women's and girls' organizations, experts and institutions
  • informs about current women's policy issues through publications, on its website and on social media
  • utilizes and supports numerous public formats to highlight structural disadvantages faced by women and to demand their interests
  • is the central complaints office for sexist advertising in public spaces in the state of Bremen

Based on a cooperation agreement with the Senator for Health, Women and Consumer Protection, the ZGF also assumes ministerial women's policy tasks of the department.

The ZGF (Center for Gender Equality) is available to women's representatives as a contact point, for example, regarding legal issues in their field of work. If you would like an initial consultation, please be sure to schedule an appointment by phone beforehand. You can do this with the contact persons in Bremen and Bremerhaven. We also provide information and our brochures online, which can answer your initial questions. Women's representatives can also find initial information there.
