German Parity Welfare Association, Bremen State Association. The Paritätische Bremen (Parity Association of Bremen) is a leading umbrella organization for independent welfare organizations and a central body for social service providers in Bremen and Bremerhaven: associations, foundations, and non-profit companies. Approximately 200 organizations with around 600 facilities are members of the Paritätische Bremen. These organizations employ 17,760 people and have an estimated 6,500 volunteers. Under the Paritätische umbrella, there are housing options for the elderly and people with disabilities, daycare centers, self-help groups, care and support services, services for offenders and the homeless, and much more. A characteristic feature of the Paritätische is that its member organizations are legally independent. Openness and tolerance are fundamental principles of Paritätische social work. As a leading umbrella organization, the Paritätische Bremen represents the interests of its members in society, politics, and administration and influences the shaping of Bremen's social, financial, and public policy. The association advocates for social equality, opposes exclusion and discrimination, and thus contributes to shaping a democratic, just, and socially just culture in the state of Bremen. The Bremen state association does not operate its own social services. However, it is a shareholder in legally independent limited liability companies (GmbHs) that are active in social work or offer services to social organizations. The Bremen state association is one of 15 state associations of the Paritätische Gesamtverband (Parity Welfare Association). Nationwide, approximately 10,000 organizations with around 500,000 employees belong to the Paritätische. The Paritätische was founded in 1924 as the "Fifth Welfare Association." A state branch existed in Bremen until 1933. It was re-established as the "Fifth Welfare Association" in 1946, and from 1949 onward, it was known as the German Parity Welfare Association, Bremen State Association (DPWV).
