The central information platform "Bremen Heat Portal" has recently gone online. Here, citizens can find all the important information and resources regarding the health risks of heat. These include heat protection tips, a map of cool spots and drinking water fountains, and explanations of urban heat islands and building insulation.

High temperatures and heat waves will become even more frequent in Bremen and Bremerhaven in the future, not just in summer. Heat is the greatest climate-related health risk – this is where the Bremen/Bremerhaven Heat Action Plan of the Bremen Senate comes in. The Heat Portal is the central information platform for the state of Bremen. It compiles current information, behavioral recommendations, and background information on all aspects of heat. It also includes a map showing cool places – both indoors and outdoors – that are publicly accessible during a heat wave. In addition, there is a directory of all drinking water fountains in Bremen and Bremerhaven.

Better protection and equal opportunities in health

The new initiative is one of 30 measures covering a broad spectrum of heat protection. The long-term goal is to better protect particularly vulnerable groups who are more susceptible to heat due to health or social circumstances, thereby improving health equity. This will include, for example, providing further training for caregivers, family caregivers, and volunteers in the care sector; making more cool places available; and structurally adapting and modifying public buildings and spaces.

Heat prevention as a cross-cutting task across departments and cities

Effective heat prevention is therefore a cross-cutting issue. The senatorial authorities for health, environment, social affairs, education, urban development, the interior, and finance, along with the Bremerhaven city council, are collaborating across departmental and city boundaries with stakeholders outside the administration. At the beginning of the year, a coordination office was established within the Bremen public health department, funded by EU grants, to serve as a central point of contact for all those involved in implementing the heat action plan.
