Your right
Employees in Bremen have a legal right to educational leave.* The same applies to all employees from outside Bremen who are employed there. The law grants a total entitlement of 10 days over a two-year period.
Employees continue to receive their normal wages from their employer. Educational leave is intended for political, professional, and general continuing education (§ 1 para. 1 BremBZG). The State of Bremen subsidizes educational leave.
Your request for educational leave at the time you have applied for can only be denied if compelling operational reasons or the vacation requests of other employees, which deserve priority from a social point of view, conflict with it.
The employer is obligated to inform the employee as early as possible, generally within one week, whether educational leave will be granted (§ 7 BremBZG). Take advantage of your right to educational leave.
Should you have problems with your employer, you can contact the legal advice service of the Chamber of Employees on telephone number 0421-36301-29.
*) According to this law, civil servants and judges are not entitled to participate. However, they can still participate, as there are corresponding equal treatment regulations. Our training courses in Bad Zwischenahn are generally also recognized as educational leave in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia.
