DIAKO Health Initiatives offers a program for overweight children and teenagers (from primary school age) and their parents, which has been successfully running since 2010. The program "Strong Children – Strong Bremen West" helps to lose excess weight.
More and more children are suffering from obesity,
…from which various physical problems can develop. Besides reduced physical performance, it can lead to overuse injuries of joints, tendons, or the spine, and promote the development of high blood pressure or diabetes mellitus. Not to be forgotten are the psychological problems that can arise from teasing, isolation, and feelings of inferiority.
The program is based on three pillars: nutrition, exercise, and psychosocial counseling. The Dritons Dance School is a partner for the exercise program, where the children dance hip hop weekly. Nutritional and psychosocial counseling sessions alternate weekly. The basics of healthy eating are taught, and the children also cook and eat together. During the counseling sessions, a psychologist discusses topics such as emotional eating and eating out of boredom. He also considers it important to strengthen the children's self-confidence.
The children stay together in a group for a year, supporting each other and having fun together. Their parents are actively involved in the program to achieve a lasting impact. The goal is to change eating and exercise habits in the long term. For this reason, health insurance companies cover up to 80% of the costs.
