Day of Caring

The principle of the Day of Caring is simple: companies give their employees a day off so that they can work in non-profit organizations for a good cause.

The idea of corporate volunteering (voluntary employee engagement) originated in the USA and has been implemented in Bremen by the Bremen Volunteer Agency since 2004.

We offer:

  • Comprehensive advice and provision of information material for the preparation and implementation of the Day of Caring
  • Finding the right partner in the non-profit sector
  • Selecting a suitable engagement opportunity
  • Support in recruiting staff for the action day
  • Assistance with press and public relations
  • Photographic documentation and follow-up (e.g., evaluation among the participants)

For all activities that go beyond introductory advice on corporate volunteering, we rely on expense allowances.

Frank Mayer is responsible for four volunteer programs: Reading Time, Double Thinkers, Arrival Mentorships, and the Day of Caring. Currently, over 400 volunteers in Reading Time and Double Thinkers work as reading and math tutors in more than 50 Bremen elementary schools. Doublethinker

Around 90 "double thinkers" are visiting over twenty primary schools in Bremen to discover the world of numbers with first and second graders.

The focus is not on cramming and rote learning, but on the enjoyment of mathematics. Both adults and children can learn from each other here. Hence the name "Double Thinker".

Expert advice

Advice for professionals who are in contact with boys* affected by violence

The Boys' Office offers advice to professionals who work with boys* affected by violence. This service is aimed at all professional groups in the fields of social and socio-educational work, education (schools/daycare), pedagogy, health, and the justice system.

The service is free of charge and usually takes place in the premises of the Young People's Office.

The Bremen Boys' Office offers advice on the following topics:

  • Bullying & Exclusion
  • Domestic violence
  • Violence by peer groups
  • public authority
  • in cases of sexualized violence.

We also support you in other forms of violence, for example if a boy* or young man* is affected by forced marriage, transphobic, homophobic or racist violence.

The counseling center is responsible for boys and young men who are or have been affected by violence. However, regarding sexual abuse among children, both relatives of affected boys and of perpetrators can seek advice from us.

This also applies to the professionals who are in contact with these boys*. If necessary, we will discuss with you which procedures are appropriate to protect the boys* affected by violence and to limit the actions of the abusive children.

What does the asterisk (*) after boys and men mean?
Boys are very diverse, and not everyone identifies as male or female. We use the asterisk (*) after boys and men to reflect this diversity.

Clarification assistance in cases of suspected sexualized violence:
If you are in contact with a boy* in your field of work and there is concern that he may be affected by sexualized violence, we support you with clarification discussions.

Having a suspicion or even a hunch doesn't mean you already have proof or facts. Whether it's about unusual behavior or strange statements from the boy*, and even if it's just a gut feeling at first: we take your concerns seriously and will support you in organizing your thoughts, reflecting on the clues, and working with you to develop possible courses of action.

BRISE contact points

BRISE is Bremen's initiative to strengthen early childhood development. With this initiative, the city of Bremen focuses on the development of children in their first years of life. Bremen is committed to providing even more effective support for children and their families during this phase of life.

The support program extends over several years: starting in the last trimester of pregnancy and continuing into the first year of primary school.
Families from the following districts of Bremen are eligible to participate:

  • In the north of Bremen:
Aumund-Hammersbeck, Blumenthal, Burgdamm, Fähr-Lobbendorf, Grohn, Lesum, Lüssum-Bockhorn, Vegesack)
  • In Bremen's southern districts:
Alte Neustadt, Buntentor, Gartenstadt Süd, Hohentor Süd, Huckelriede, Kattenesch, Kattenturm, Kirchhuchting, Mittelshuchting, Sodenmatt, Südervorstadt, Woltmershausen
  • In Bremen East

  • In Bremen's western districts:
Gröpelingen, Walle, Lindenhof, Ohlenhof, Oslebshausen, Überseestadt, Utbremen, Steffensweg, Osterfeuerberg, Westend

Some families participating in BRISE receive support to utilize the services offered by BRISE over the years. Most families, however, continue to decide for themselves which services they wish to use for themselves and their child.

From the time shortly before the child's birth until its first year of primary school, information is repeatedly requested from the families as part of the long-term scientific study, and the child's development is observed.

The current four-year funding period for the long-term study is to be extended for another four years. The scientific monitoring usually takes place in the family's home environment. It is conducted by a qualified contact person who is assigned to the family long-term, and the families are compensated for their time and effort.

BRISE provides mothers and fathers with regular additional information about their child's development.

What does BRISE include?
In the city's districts, BRISE collaborates with support centers and services to strengthen early childhood development. Seven of these services are presented below; some of the families participating in BRISE have already accessed them. They largely complement existing services in Bremen and are open to all Bremen families.

BRISE on-site – Our contact points
BRISE covers large parts of Bremen. To ensure that families and other interested parties can reach BRISE personally in their local area, there are so-called BRISE contact points. At each contact point, there are people who are particularly knowledgeable about BRISE. These contact points are places where you can find out more about BRISE and who can support you if you would like to participate.

Contact points also offer those active in the field of family and children the opportunity to get in touch with BRISE and receive information and materials.
