Early intervention for children from birth to school entry
The early years are crucial for a child's future development. Experiences during this time form the basis for how they orient themselves in their environment, how they learn, and how they understand their world. Some children need special support during this process. Early intervention programs are available for children from birth until they start school.
Early intervention services are available
- as purely therapeutic education or
- as a comprehensive service (special education support and medical-therapeutic support)
Early intervention takes place in
- the interdisciplinary early intervention center (IFF)
- in a daycare center (daycare/nursery) or
- at home
Developmental abnormalities in children can arise for a variety of reasons and may manifest themselves in the following areas, for example:
- Movement: when turning, sitting, crawling, standing, walking…
- Perception: hearing, seeing, feeling, touching, and finding balance…
- Language: during swallowing, chewing, vocalizing and speaking…
- Behavior: in social interaction, play behavior and socio-emotional behavior (being anxious, restless, withdrawn or aggressive) …
Early intervention processes
The support measures and opportunities for the child, as well as the framework within which the child's self-directed activity can develop, are individually tailored. They are based on the understanding that all areas of development are interconnected and mutually influential; that is, early intervention programs impact the child's developmental areas.
- Early intervention services
The role of special education is to stimulate a child's development and the unfolding of their personality using educational methods. The special education professional is aware of the child's next developmental step and supports them in achieving it, recognizing their individual problem-solving methods. The journey itself is the goal. The professional coordinates appropriate activities with the child and/or their family to encourage, enable, and/or facilitate these next developmental steps.
- Complex service
Within this comprehensive service, early intervention services, including special education and medical-therapeutic support, are provided by a single provider. Depending on the individual treatment plan, the child receives early intervention services in the form of special education, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, or speech therapy, all at one location. Psychological counseling can also be provided as a supplement.
- Interdisciplinary diagnostics and support and treatment planning
Interdisciplinary diagnostics assesses a child's opportunities for participation in their living environment and their integration within their family. The services provided by interdisciplinary diagnostics are therefore not symptom-oriented, but rather system-oriented, delivered by specialists from various fields. The diagnostic process includes initial, progress, and final assessments.
