The inclusive shared apartment in Bremen is a place where people with intellectual or multiple disabilities and people without disabilities can live together. Residents must be able to freely and willingly choose to live in the shared apartment and to participate in shaping community life.
Residents with disabilities can be admitted to the shared apartment after completing their compulsory schooling. It is important that they have regular employment or work on weekdays.
The residents without disabilities must acknowledge the goals and tasks of the shared living arrangement and the association Inklusive WG Bremen and be willing and able to live together with their disabled fellow residents on an equal footing.
The non-disabled residents have no specific educational role; rather, in line with this inclusive concept, they are "specialists in everyday life."
The residents themselves, together with the board of the Inclusive Shared Living Bremen association, decide on the admission of new residents. Prior to admission to the shared living arrangement, prospective residents participate in a trial period and joint activities, allowing them to get to know each other and decide whether they wish to live together.
Residents with disabilities each rent their own room and share common areas such as living rooms, kitchens, bathrooms and storage rooms.
The inclusive shared apartment in Bremen is intended to be a successful model for inclusion and to have an impact beyond its own premises. It will be located in a place that, thanks to good public transport connections and easy access to shops, restaurants, pubs, and cultural offerings, particularly facilitates participation in social life.
