The Bremen School Museum has been part of the State Institute for Schools (LIS) since January 2026. To mark the conclusion of the onboarding process, the LIS officially welcomed the museum in a ceremony on June 23. At the same time, the sponsoring association, Bremen School Museum e.V., was formally thanked for its service and its commitment to the museum's development over the past 16 years.

“We are pleased to be able to hand over the school museum, as this represents an important step towards sustainability,” emphasized Georg Schweppe, chairman of the sponsoring association, in his speech, explaining: “The school museum is not an institution that looks to the past, but to the future – and for that it needs good ideas and strong partners.”.

Extracurricular learning venues constantly offer new didactic formats and topics

Museum director Frauke Hellwig used impressive pictures to trace the development of the museum:

  • the first exhibition “Learning in Bremen – what the schools offer” (1978)
  • the founding of the School History Collection (1983)
  • the preparation of the rooms in the school building “Auf der Hohwisch”
  • the rediscovery of the earth bunker
  • the new permanent exhibition with the section "Childhood and Youth in Bremen under National Socialism"
  • new media stations in the exhibition (2024/25)

The development would not have been possible without the sponsoring association and circle of friends. At the same time, Hellwig emphasized the museum's continuous development: "Even today, we see ourselves as an extracurricular learning center and are constantly testing new didactic formats and topics.".

Continuing successful work – with schools and in teacher training

With its integration into the State Institute, a new chapter has begun for the School Museum. The successful work will be continued, the connection to Bremen schools further strengthened, and collaborations in teacher training expanded.
