Event series: # ERROR

Bro, get real: Counteracting misogyny online.

Young men are increasingly susceptible to misogynistic messages and problematic images of masculinity. They are particularly bombarded with misogynistic content on social media. To counter this, we need laws – but also effective counter-strategies. That's what we want to discuss!

Our guest is media scholar Dr. Maya Götz. She will talk about her current findings on gender representation in social media and how video clips published on TikTok can change gender perceptions for better or for worse. She has tested the impact of video clips together with young people. We will present the example of the online platform frauenseiten.bremen.de to illustrate how virtual spaces and feminist content can empower girls and women online.

Admission is free, but registration is required:

Practical dialogue: Well supported through the heat

Protection around birth and early childhood

Practical dialogue on heat, pregnancy & early childhood: Keynote speech, exchange and networking for professionals in the fields of protection, prevention and health promotion.

How can we effectively raise awareness among pregnant women and parents of infants and toddlers in the state of Bremen about the risks of heat stress and empower them to cope in everyday life? This question will be addressed in the practical dialogue. Following an inspiring keynote address by Prof. Ekkehard Schleußner from Jena, we cordially invite you to participate in the exchange: Share your experiences, learn about proven practical approaches, and take away new ideas and helpful materials for your own work.

Heat waves pose an increasing health risk for pregnant women, newborns, and young children. Pregnancy complications such as premature births or (pre-)eclampsia, as well as hospital admissions of infants, occur more frequently during heat waves. Effective protective measures and appropriate behavior could protect these individuals.

The project "Climate-Healthy Around Birth & Early Childhood" addresses this issue and invites practical dialogue. Over coffee and snacks, participants will have the opportunity to exchange ideas, find inspiration, and develop strategies together. A keynote address by Prof. Schleußner, Director of the Department of Obstetrics at Jena University Hospital, will highlight the far-reaching effects of increasing heat stress, even in our latitudes, on pregnancy and child health, as well as potential courses of action. Following this, we will discuss information and support options for pregnant women and parents of infants experiencing heat stress. We will place a particular focus on families in socially disadvantaged circumstances.

Everyone who accompanies, advises, or cares for pregnant women, infants, and toddlers, as well as those who coordinate, manage, or plan related services, is invited: professionals from obstetrics, gynecology, and pediatrics; from early intervention and family counseling services; from social work in neighborhoods and community shelters; as well as stakeholders from public health services, municipal health planning, network coordination, health insurance companies, and all other interested parties. Feel free to bring your children – we look forward to welcoming guests of all ages.

Continuing education credits for midwives and physicians are being applied for. Participation is free of charge. The networking meeting is offered as part of the project "Climate Health Around Birth and Early Childhood," funded by the GKV Alliance for Health Bremen.

Children of prisoners

Hoppenbank eV makes the situation of affected children and families visible, networks, trains and raises awareness among professionals — across institutions.

In Germany, an estimated 100,000 children are affected each year by the incarceration of a parent. Through no fault of their own, they bear the consequences of a situation they did not cause: experiencing separation, fear of loss, shame, and guilt can significantly burden their upbringing. Even today, the incarceration of a parent is often associated with stigmatization and the fear of social ostracism. Regular, well-supported contact with the incarcerated parent and targeted support for the entire family can help them cope better with this burden. Children have a right to a relationship with both parents.

Hoppenbank eV raises awareness of the situation of affected children and families, connects professionals, trains them, and educates them across institutions. We offer advice, support, and concrete services to affected families—always with the goal of strengthening the rights of affected children.

Offers:

  • Advice & Support
  • Family-friendly services in the prison system
  • Networking of skilled workers

Professional development course: “Right-wing extremism in youth work – recognizing, understanding, and acting”

For greater confidence in everyday teaching practice

Far-right attitudes and behaviors are gaining increasing influence among young people – visible in social media, youth centers, and schools. Educational professionals face the challenge of recognizing far-right positions early on, responding appropriately, and building supportive relationships without losing sight of protecting those potentially affected.

This three-day training course provides a space to address these areas of tension and develop confidence in action for pedagogical practice. The course begins with a focus on current manifestations of right-wing extremism, particularly among young people in the state of Bremen, supplemented by the exchange of experiences and reflection. Right-wing extremist codes and symbols, as well as their meaning in their respective contexts, are also examined. The course also addresses the protection and support of those affected. Building on this foundation, participants develop strategies for action in their own pedagogical practice.

The training combines expert input with exchange, case studies, and practical reflection. It is aimed at educational professionals and multipliers in school-based and extracurricular youth and educational work in the state of Bremen.

Sexual education in child and youth welfare

Professional handling of sexuality in child and youth welfare: gaining confidence, developing an attitude and developing practical guidelines for everyday work.

Sexuality is a central theme in the work with children and young people – often visible, sometimes indirect, but almost always present. Questions about relationships, clothing, body awareness and sensations, as well as dealing with intimacy and personal boundaries, are part of everyday educational practice. Nevertheless, professional approaches to these topics are frequently characterized by uncertainty, often based on intuition, or taboo due to shame and feeling overwhelmed.

But what does professional competence mean when dealing with sexuality in child and youth welfare services? What legal frameworks must be observed? And how can professionals remain confident, reflective, and capable of acting effectively?

In my workshops and training courses, I support professionals in developing a clear professional stance and creating concrete, practical courses of action. The goal is to gain confidence in dealing with sexuality-related topics and to integrate this knowledge competently, sensitively, and in a legally sound manner into their work with children, young people, and their environment.

State Coordination Office for Early Intervention Services

The first months and years of life are of paramount importance for the child's entire subsequent development. It is especially important during this time to support (expectant) parents in order to foster a positive parent-child relationship.

To achieve this goal, the legislator stipulated in Section 3 Paragraph 4 of the Law on Cooperation and Information in Child Protection (KKG) that the Federal Government shall establish a permanent fund to ensure the early intervention networks and the psychosocial support of pregnant women and families with infants and toddlers aged 0 to 3 years.

Tasks of the State Coordination Office for Early Intervention:

  • Funding for projects financed through the Federal Foundation for Early Childhood Intervention
  • Further development and quality improvement of early intervention services at the state level
  • Cooperation at the federal level
  • Public relations work on early intervention topics

What are early intervention services?

  • promote primary and secondary prevention and health promotion
  • are aimed at all families from pregnancy until the child's third birthday
  • are precisely tailored to the specific needs of different families
  • They particularly support families with a medium level of stress
  • can be used as early as possible, with low barriers and on a voluntary basis
  • This means a resource-oriented promotion of parental competence and parental self-efficacy
  • contribute to networking between families and professionals
  • are part of a comprehensive municipal concept and are scientifically sound.
