Bremen Network Dementia and Migration

The “Bremen Network Dementia and Migration” has been part of the nationwide network of 580 Local Alliances since January 2022, which are professionally advised and supported by the network office “Local Alliances for People with Dementia”, located at BAGSO – Federal Association of Senior Citizens' Organizations eV.

What we do in Bremen:

  • Together with institutions, associations and individuals who play important roles in everyday life for the people in the neighborhood, we are looking for ways to ensure that people with dementia and a migration background receive support and opportunities for participation.
  • We offer advice and information for those affected and their relatives, as well as discussion groups and workshops for multipliers.

The increasing number of older people with a migration background is increasingly coming into focus for institutions, and thus also the recognition of their needs and the necessity to adapt to them.

The goal of our project is to improve the access to support services for people with dementia and a migration background. This involves both raising awareness of existing options and developing innovative services. Inclusive services must be developed to ensure these individuals remain integrated into daily life.

We are working on this with our cooperation partners, institutions and organizations, primarily in Bremen's western districts. In addition to consultations and information events, we are also planning painting groups, exhibitions, exercise programs, discussion groups, and we welcome suggestions.

Fears surrounding dementia should be reduced. Family members are also affected and should be involved and supported.

Those interested are welcome to join our Bremen Dementia and Migration Network. The last two years with the pandemic have shown us particularly clearly how important supporting older people is – and also how to try out new approaches to doing so.

AK Bremen protest against discrimination and for equality of disabled people

The Bremen Protest Working Group is an alliance of disabled and non-disabled people as well as organizations by and for disabled people.

Since 1993, the members of the working group have been preparing the content and organization of the annual Bremen Protest Day against discrimination of disabled people. Hence, the original name was: Bremen Protest Day Working Group.

Over the years, the working group came to the realization that it is not enough to make a loud appearance only once a year on the day of protest. Rather, it is important to urge politicians throughout the year to address the demands of people with disabilities.

This realization also led to a change in the working group's self-understanding: It no longer sees its tasks solely as preparing the day of protest, but rather as advocating for the equality of disabled people in Bremen – and the day of protest is one tool among others for this purpose. To reflect this externally, the group changed its name. The Bremen Protest Day Working Group became the Bremen Protest Working Group against Discrimination and for Equality of Disabled People, or simply: the Bremen Protest Working Group.

Over the years, the working group has developed into a permanent fixture of the disability self-help movement. On average, 20-25 people from a wide variety of organizations or those with a personal interest participate in the monthly meetings. The working group members address all conceivable issues facing disability self-help and are responsible for the organizational and substantive preparation of the annual protest day.

Anyone who would like to participate in the working group in the future should contact the LAGS office so that they can be invited to the meetings.
